Embracing the Unknown: Yanira's Journey to Puerto Rico

by Yanira Borges

July 10, 2024

As we prepare to be away from our cozy home, my family and I are filled with a mix of excitement and apprehension. We are about to embark on a five-month study abroad journey to Puerto Rico, my place of birth. This adventure is equal parts about language immersion, about living the island life, reconnecting with our roots, and healing old wounds.

A Leap /Un Salto

Leaving behind the comforts of home, we are stepping into a world of firsts. For my husband, our two kids, and me, this move represents the first of many epic family adventures. We decided on this study abroad tour long ago, and now it’s our reality. The kids are buzzing with nervous energy, my husband is steady as ever, and me? I am taking it one step at a time.

Cultural Immersion and Learning/ Cultura

Puerto Rico holds a special place in my heart. It’s where I was born, where my ancestors are from and where many relatives still live. This journey is about understanding where I come from and sharing that knowledge with our children.

Family Bonding/ Familia

This trip is a chance for us to reset as a family. Away from old routines, we have the opportunity to reconnect, understand each other better, and strengthen our bonds. The kids are growing up fast, and this shared experience will be unforgettable.

Generational Healing/Sanar las generaciones

A significant part of this journey is mending my relationship with my father, who lives in Puerto Rico and is legally blind. We haven’t spent much time together, and this trip is a chance to rewrite our story. I want my children to know their grandfather and our large family, understanding their heritage and the bonds that tie us together.

Inner Child Healing/ Sanar la niñez

As we take this leap into the unknown, I’m reminded of the importance of nurturing our inner child. I want my children to see that life is an adventure, full of surprises and opportunities. By stepping out of our comfort zone, we’re teaching them to be brave, curious, and resilient.

Stay tuned/ Adios

Here’s to the beginning of an unforgettable journey. To the moments of joy, the lessons learned, and the memories made. Puerto Rico, here we come. Ready to embrace the unknown, face our fears, and grow together as a family.

Con mucho amor,

Yanira y Familia
